‘Moody piano pop, neo-’60s soul, orchestral psychedelia — Liam Hayes’ aptitude for artfully plundering the past without ever repeating himself earned the Chicago-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist a global cult following (and a cameo in Stephen Frears’ High Fidelity) long before director Roman Coppola tapped him to score last year’s “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III.” While comparably retro, Hayes’ newly completed “Slurrup” is leaner and meaner than anything he’s done all millennium. Next-gen garage Americana firebrands Empires headline. ‘

Liam’s Swan Dive

This year brings two revelations from Chicago-born pop/soul/torch-singer Liam Hayes of Plush. Spring will offer Hayes’s fourth album, the sweetly sad Korp Sole Roller (produced by Wilco’s Pat Sansone). And this week it’s the soundtrack to the Roman Coppola–written/directed A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, opening for limited engagements on February 8 (but available on iTunes). The soundtrack includes a mix of Plush songs, gently orchestrated instrumentals, and a pretty-decent Charlie Sheen–sung version of bossa standard “Aguas de Marco” — a must for fans long desperate for Plush on vinyl.

Review of Liam’s Chicago Performance

Meanwhile, opener Liam Hayes, who goes by the stage moniker Plush, managed, just like Marling, to captivate the audience without sounding or looking so alone on a big stage in a big theater despite being the only one up there. When thinking about Hayes’ sound, think Foxygen meets Kurt Vile, or even Harry Nilsson-like vocals complementing shimmery, gorgeous guitar licks. Hayes and Marling couldn’t be more different, but offered a one-two punch well worth the price of admission. – JM

Check out Roman Coppola’s Interview!

Liam Hayes and Plush do most of the music for Charles Swan. How did you hear about Plush and how’d you end up working with Liam? Why does his music work in the film?
You know, I had a very deep obsession with Liam Hayes. He’s a friend and he’s a brilliant songwriter and artist. When I was making my movie—it’s not a joke—I was exclusively listening to his music. It represented the movie and it just spoke to me; I had a deep deep connection with him as a person, and with his music, to the exclusion of pretty much everything else.
